“We saw it as an opportunity to experience something new”

Green and friendly. This is how Margareta Dembkowska describes Mariestad, her new hometown. She and her three children moved here from Poland after her husband was relocated to a job in Sweden.
“Mariestad is a beautiful town with a great deal of green space! Last fall, nature had so many beautiful colors and I’m looking forward to enjoying the long days during my first summer here.”
Margareta Dembkowska has lived in Mariestad together with her husband, three children, two cats and a dog since September 2024. The family’s eldest daughter still lives in Poland with her fiancé.
“We bought the dog last November here in Sweden, but the cats moved here with us.”
Margareta had never been to Sweden before the family decided to move here. But her husband, who is employed by Partex, which has operations in both Gullspång and Poland, was a regular visitor to Sweden on business. Last year he was given the opportunity to begin working in Gullspång.
- “We saw it as an opportunity to experience something new. An entirely new life,” Margareta tells us.

Cleaner, greener and friendlier
In Poland, the family lived in the town of Toruń, which has a population of around 200,000. Margareta feels that Mariestad, with barely 25,000 residents, is cleaner, greener and friendlier.
“I enjoy taking long walks and when I’m out everybody I meet greets me with a ‘Hi there!’ and a smile. That just doesn't happen in Poland! And everybody introduces themselves by their first name; we’re not expected to call certain people ‘Mr. or Mrs. so-and-so ’. Everyone is equal.”

Would like to work with people
Margareta is studying Swedish at SFI and she aims to learn the language quickly so she can find a job. In Poland she worked at a bank, but when asked what she would like to do here she says it doesn’t really matter.
"Just as long as I get to meet people. I don't enjoy working alone. Because I don’t think I’ll learn to speak Swedish properly until I get a job with colleagues to talk to a lot, I’m applying for all source of jobs right now. I’ll think about what kind of job to do in the future when the time comes.”
